Ancient Egypt

Story of the Week:

The Case of Peneb

Peneb was an Egyptian man from the Middle Kingdom with a lengthy criminal past full of rape, theft, robbery, and physical abusing his workers.

He had an advantage, though, in that he ranked highly in society.

In this case he is charged with threatening Neferhotep, his chief-workman, and assaulting 9 other men. “I will kill him in the night” Peneb says during trial, “and he beat nine men in that night” court records continue.

Unfortunately the ancient records abruptly end there. Did he get emasculated, executed, or did he get off easy due to his status in society? We can only guess.
